Shri Ganesha, the God of learning and the remover of obstacles, is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. He is considered as the God of auspicious beginnings and bestower of fortune in abundance. Shri Ganesha is also called Vinayak (proficient) or Vighneshwar (God to remove deterrants).
He is the first worshiped God. His trunk symbolizes the fact that the wise person has both immense strength and fine discrimination. He has large ears to hear all. He has four hands. In one hand He holds a lotus, the symbol of enlightenment. In the other hand He holds a hatchet; with which the old karma, all the sanskars, the accumulated good and bad of past deeds get cut when enlightenment comes. The third hand holds laddus, the round sweet-meats; the rewards of a wise life. The fourth hand is shown blessing the people. A unique combination of his elephant like head and quick moving tiny mouse vehicle represents excellent wisdom for intelligence and presence of mind.
There are so many Ganesha forms that one sees today as His image has been widely created and experimented upon.
This particular idol is of Shri Ganesha in a sitting posture. Usually when we see a seated idol of Lord Ganesha, he is sitting on a throne or on a lotus flower. The most common sitting posture is known as the Lalitasana. It shows Ganpathi sitting on a throne with his left leg folded and the right leg resting on the ground or vice versa. In some of the idols, He is seen sitting cross legged on a lotus flower and that particular posture denotes that he is meditating. The leg that rests on the ground shows that Shri Ganesha is concerned about the affairs of the world and is there to help devotee and bestow his blessings on the world. The other leg however denotes his semi meditation pose.
